Material: 

A standard yoga mat will most likely be made from PVC and while this material is often cheaper, it isn’t always recyclable. Many yogis prefer to avoid plastic and opt for a more eco-friendly choice of either cork, jute or natural rubber.

Thickness: 

A thicker yoga mat will naturally provide more comfort and is best for those prone to injury or who need extra support for their spine and joints. However, a thinner yoga mat allows yogis to ground themselves through the floor and find stability – so finding a mat to suit your practice is key.

Grip: 

A non-slip mat (both on the floor and on your hands) can make a huge difference to your yoga session. Good grip lets you press the ground away through your hands and feet rather than holding on to the mat. If you’re a beginner, a non-slip mat will help you to hold each pose and find your balance, while yogi experts will find that rubber mats absorb any sweat or moisture and keep you connected during a more intense session, but still allow for fluid movements.

Length: 

The standard size of a yoga mat is around 180 x 64 cm, which is ideal for almost any asana and poses. There are larger mats available through for those who would like extra room, or if you intend to use your mat for HIIT session or other workouts, too.

Weight/portability: 

The weight of your yoga mat will depend on what it’s made from – rubber is heaviest – and its thickness. If portability is a concern, there are travel mats on the market that work just as well. Anything around 2kg or less is considered lightweight and can be taken to your yoga class or to the park with ease.
