Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently expressed deep shock and anguish over the harrowing Manipur video. The video showed two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a few men from the other side.

In his address to the media ahead of the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament, he strongly condemned the disturbing incident. He also reassured the nation that those responsible for such heinous acts would face the full force of the law.

PM Modi‘s Outrage: Manipur video

PM Modi said that the video showing the atrocity against women in Manipur was the most shameful. He was pained and angered by the incident. Modi asked for chief ministers of all states to take the strongest possible action against criminals involved in atrocities. He further said that the dignity of women and girls must be protected. He also said that the guilty will not be spared and will be subjected to the severest punishment.

The Incident

The widely circulated video showed men constantly molesting the two women. According to Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, the incident happened in Kangpokpi district on May 4. Several opposition MPs have given notices in Parliament demanding discussions on the situation in Manipur. Arising from the controversy as the video of the two women being paraded naked surfaced and was widely circulated.

Center’s Action: Manipur video

The Center has asked Twitter and other social media platforms to pull down the video of the two Manipur women as the matter is under investigation. Manipur has been witnessing violence since May 3, following protests by the Kuki and Naga communities against the High Court’s order asking the state government to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the category of Scheduled Tribes (ST).

PM Narendra Modi has vowed to take strong action against the perpetrators responsible for the incident in Manipur. He has asked the chief ministers of all states to take the strongest possible action against criminals who are involved in atrocities against women. The Center has asked social media platforms to pull down the video.
