The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that the admission of undergraduate students in 45 central universities in the country will be done through a public entrance examination. The exam will take place in the first week of July.
The CUET 2022 examination will be conducted by the National Examination Agency. Following this examination, each university will conduct student admission on the basis of a list of qualifications prepared by the NTA. There is no general consultation procedure.
Below are 5 key features of the new General Entrance Exam– CUET 2022
1. 12th-grade board mark is useless
From this year onwards, admission to undergraduate courses at all 45 Central Universities will now be based solely on the CUET score. Therefore, the marks obtained in the Class 12 board examinations will have no bearing on university admission. Universities, meanwhile, may use board exam scores as a criterion for eligibility for CUET.
2. No change in seat reservation
The CUET exam is mandatory at all 45 UGC-funded central universities. Minority institutions such as AMU and Jamia must also adhere to the entrance examination criteria for student admission.
UGC Chairman M Jagtesh Kumar said the CUET would not affect the allocation of seats in such institutions. But they must enroll all students only through common selection.
The only difference is that these students have to come through CUET just like the students who come in a public reservation. He said there would be no change in the reservation policies and regulations of the universities.
3. Exempt from CUET for International Students
International students wishing to enroll in Central Universities are exempt from CUET. The merger is based on the existing Supernumerary Seat.
4. Examination in 13 languages – CUET 2022
Under the new national education policy, the CUET exam promotes state education. Accordingly, the general entrance examination is conducted in 13 languages namely Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, Oriya, and English.
5. Selection based on 12th class NCERT textbooks
The UGC President said the three-and-a-half-hour computer-based entrance exam will feature multi-choice questions based on the content of Class 12 NCERT textbooks. CUET consists of three parts. Students will be given a negative mark for incorrect answers.
