In Europe, Greece is struggling to put out wildfires. Rome has mobilised a task force to hand out water and help people suffering from heat stress.

In South and Southeast Asia, the stifling heat began long before the summer. India recorded the hottest February in its history. In Iran, the heat index reached an extraordinary high of 152 degrees Fahrenheit at one point. China, a series of heat waves have caused power stations to break records for generating electricity, and some internet users have reported scattered blackouts. In Japan, nine people were taken to the hospital after temperatures neared 100 degrees.

The punishing conditions across the world have forced leaders to recognise the need for global action on climate change. US Special Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry recently met with Chinese officials to coordinate a global response to the crisis. Authorities have opened air-conditioned venues and restricted access to the Acropolis to cooler morning and afternoon hours.
